There’s no doubt there is always work to do on a farming property but unless you schedule regular maintenance in the short term, you might be inundated with larger costs down the line. Here are some maintenance tips that will keep your farm looking presentable, safe and working efficiently.

Keeping up with the Joneses

Property Maintenance

  • Monitor the fence line of your property: check gate latches, test electric fences and check posts (fix if rotten or leaning).
  • Plant a cover crop when pastures aren’t in use to: suppress weeds, help build fertile soil and control pests.

Building Maintenance

  • Check the farm house for building wear and tear
  • Check animal quarters for any damage or problems

Machinery Maintenance

  • Keep your machinery clean so that any wear and tear is easily identifiable
  • Ensure any staff is trained on how to operate and repair machinery so that problems can be repaired immediately and not left to a particular person
  • Lubricate your machinery regularly to reduce friction and increase longevity
  • Schedule regular services and stick with them

Overall, ensure there is a system to follow. You may like to repair issues as you find them or take notes and schedule a set number of hours each week or month to address them. Revisit the plan and goals for your farm on a regular basis and check that you are on target in terms of the quality of your farming vehicles, land and buildings.

If and when the time comes to replace buildings on your property, including the family residence, you may wish to consider a prefabricated modular building to replace the original. The buildings are factory built, look right at home on any farming property and can be built in a fraction of the time that it takes to build conventional buildings onsite.
